THE NAIVE AND THE GROTESQUE: MY NOT SO SECRET, SECRET HOBBY

August 2, 2017

For years this was one of my best kept secrets and something only my closest friends were allowed to find out: I like to draw!

When I come to think of it, I always liked to doodle. Writing and drawing were both, two of my earliest passions. I remember being very ambitioned as a kid, filling up sketch book after sketch book.

Even then, my focus was never to copy the real world and draw what was in front of me, but instead, I let my subconscious run wild and created the weirdest creatures. That actually hasn't changed up to this day. I suck at trying to be realistic and lose focus, whenever I try to put on paper what is in front of me. Normally my imagination just takes over at some point. So at the beginning of most drawings I have no idea what they are going to be. I just start with random lines, until they suddenly start making sense. Then I just gor for it. My focus are the bizarre, the naive and saying the most with the least amount of effort.

Unfortunately my early hobby was never really encouraged and so at some point my skills stagnated, I lost interest and ambition to improve, until I had stopped to draw completely and forgotten about how happy it makes me to get lost in the process. It took me years to rediscover my passion and even longer to dare to show the first "works" to my friends.

Today, I still don't live up to my own standards, but I'm confident enough to share my secret with the world. So, feel privileged to take a look at the following:

Some of these were part of an advent calendar I made for friends and family. Some I used as cards, but mostly they didn't really have any purpose. They were all made between 2013 and 2016. The collage with the Tacos I actually turned into a GIF, which was shown at the Running Sushi Festival in Vienna.

If you are interested in using one of them or seeing more of my stuff, maybe commission me for something, I'd be happy to receive your e-mails.
